TI-Messenger goes Europe: Austrian healthcare adopts matrix protocol
Famedly talks about the developments in the Austrian healthcare market and the adoption of matrix as the messenger protocol of choice. Leaning into the similarities and differences between Germany and Austria.
On January 1, 2025, Austria officially discontinued the use of fax machines for exchanging patient data. While a necessary digital milestone, this abrupt shift initially led to a highly fragmented landscape of disconnected replacement solutions. Recognizing the looming interoperability crisis as early as 2024, state and federal institutions began searching for a unified, scalable alternative. Drawing inspiration from Germany, the TI Messenger was quickly identified as a highly promising blueprint for a nationwide fix.
This catalyzed a wave of regional innovation. In Salzburg, an informal pilot successfully connected the state hospital holding company (Salzburger Landeskliniken) with regional doctors' offices. This was achieved through a collaboration between industry partners Famedly and x-tention, alongside "Medspeak," a grassroots Matrix server initiative hosted by two local physicians.
Simultaneously, Austria's national regulatory authority (Elga GmbH) began drafting a standardized specification for adopting the Matrix protocol in healthcare communication nationwide. Famedly was awarded the contract to consult on the foundational version of this specification. Currently, the State of Vienna is conducting a major pilot to validate this standard, working closely with industry partners such as Famedly, x-tention, and Cloudflight.
